Dog training isn't just for the dog

Dog training isn't just for your dog, it's also about how you, the owner interacts with their dog and learns to ‘speak’ a language that they understand.  A well behaved dog is co-operating with their owner in much the same way a horse does with the rider. My training is about building the confidence of the owner in handling their dogs and in the positive reinforcement of the desired behaviour.  I offer 1-2-1 training for owners and their dogs. This can be for solving problem behaviour or for puppy set up classes for new owners or those who just want a refresher.   Don't make excuses for your dog. Being a 'rescue' dog, or being a bit longer in the tooth are not valid resasons for poor behaviour. Any dog in a new environment would be expected to toe the line and follow the rules. Your dog should be doing the same in your home - the difference is you don't know how to confidently challenge the behaviour and calmly show your dog what you expect of them.  That's where Devon Dog Training will start to help solve those issues at a first session.

What Happens on the The First Session?

A first session is held at your home, as it's the most familiar and comfortable environment for both you and your dogs. During this appointment I will assess your dog, the behaviour that you are having problems with, and how you currently handle those issues. I will then work with you to explain your dog's behaviours and the solutions that I can recommend. In this session, I will need to meet most members of your household and it will usually last approximately two hours.

This will cost £80

This needs to be followed up within two(ish) weeks with a ‘hold you accountable session’ to see if you have done your homework. This is a one hour session and costs £40. For many people, these will be the only sessions you'll need.

However, every dog and every owner are different, bad habits will need to be challenged and new desired behaviours learned, so the number of appointments needed will vary in each case. Additional sessions are £60 for a call out where required, with upto 90mins included in the price.

At a first appointment, we'll spend some time getting to know one another, your dog, the problems as you see them, and how you handle things currently. I will ask lots of questions because I need to build up a whole picture of your dog’s environment.

Dogs are pack animals by nature and crave the comfort and security of their family around them. Instinctively dogs look for a leader or ‘Alpha’ in their pack, if a leader isn't there (or isn't effective), a dog will feel that it has to fill that void and become the leader.

All dogs naturally want their humans to be the leaders in their packs and my training will show you how you can unlock your inner ‘Superhero’, the leader of your pack that your dog can be proud of.

I don't want to waste your time or money, if I don't feel that we would be able to gain a satisfactory result for either you or your dog, I’ll inform you of this and the reasons. It is not in my interest to try and train dogs (or owners) who aren’t going be receptive to my techniques or methods. You’ll just waste your money and eventually you’ll just give me a poor review, and neither of us want those outcomes.

Please be aware that there is no ‘silver bullet’, no magical solution to ‘fixing’ your dog. It takes time to get used to the techniques. I often find that the dog in training will do as I have asked, but not for their owner. This means that you will have homework to do in order to train yourself and your dog – and if the homework isn’t done you’ll be wasting your time and money at the next session!

‘The dog ate my homework’ is not a valid excuse!
