Your Dog Loves You! ♥

Your dog loves you! She’s so happy to see you, excited and beside herself with the joy of following you as the boss, but are you doing your best to live up to the ‘Superhero’ that she sees you as?  The ‘Leader’ in your dog’s pack is everything to her and you need to demonstrate the attributes of a leader or she’ll see the void in that position and step in to fill that void for the sake of your family’s pack. The truth is that too many of us have abdicated the ‘Pack Leader’ role and our dogs have stepped up to call the shots.   And in addition, many owners have unfortunately got into the habit of talking ‘human’ to our dogs - and they’re not as fluent as we’d like to think!

Hi, my name is Daryl
Hi, I started Devon Dog Training because I love dogs, I get on with them instinctively and enjoy making their lives better. My friends persuaded me that there were dog owners out there who would find my canine skills useful and I might be able to make a business from helping those people.

My family always had dogs, Spaniels when I was small, friends had Labs and Setters. I worked in a kennels that bred Labradors and also had German Wire Hair and Long Hair Pointers and Weimeraners.

The first dog I could call my own was a Weimeraner called Pasha. I had him from a Pup and was an exceptional dog, beautifully trained and devoted to me. I ended up with a pair of Weimeraners, a friend (from the kennel) gifted me her dog called Pippin. (Don't tell anyone, but I'm on the waiting list for another Weim Puppy!)

My current dogs are a lovely little Jack x Lakeland Terrier called Flossie and the ESS puppy is Douglas. Flossie was 6 years old and a problem dog when I met her. She used to start fights everywhere she went and the beach was chaos! She wore a harness with a handle on the back so she could be easily extracted from the fights she started! Happily, her temperament is excellent now. She is an asset to my training and I use her to glean insights into other problem dogs that I'm working with.

My background is in training and coaching, in fact I’m really passionate about helping people, explaining ideas and making people’s lives better in some small way. For many years I was responsible for training staff members in the team I managed. Later I worked for a Further Education College as a Trainer and NVQ Assessor working on the delivery of large change management programmes for regional and national companies. I'm also a Rugby Coach working with adults and children.

In terms of working with dogs, my training techniques are calm, compassionate and help to instill confidence in the owner in their own ability to handle their dog’s behaviour.

I do not use, condone nor recommend the use of shock collars, striking an animal or using fear to get results. My training techniques are about working with the dog's natural instincts and in teaching owners and handlers how they can use these instincts to help get the results they want.
